Dear Parents,
In today's Assembly Year 6 spoke about the importance of opening your lives and hearts to Christ and experiencing the joy, peace, mercy and love that he brings. This Sunday marks the end of the Liturgical year, with Advent marking the start of the beginning of the next. It's a time to celebrate the Kingdom of God and to reflect, ready to start the next year refreshed. Year 6 sang and performed the important message beautifully.
We visited this theme of reflection and celebration earlier in the week with Upper Trans C's Liturgy themed around Ourselves. The children spoke about how we are all different, with our own gifts and talents, but made in the image of God. It is wonderful to celebrate our differences and to bring them together as the St Bernard's Prep community, because we are greater than the sum of our parts.

Spotlight on Success
This week the spotlight on success goes to Jayan in Year 6 who was the only person to get full marks in the Primary Maths Challenge. A brilliant achievement, and a well-deserved accolade for a young person who embodies all the best qualities of a St Bernard's Prep child - hardworking and kind - congratulations Jayan.

Primary Maths Challenge
Every year we enter a National competition called The Primary Maths Challenge. The test paper is designed to encourage the children to use their Maths skill to solve problems with logical reasoning, rather than formal mathematical knowledge. Our Year 6 children did incredibly well and were awarded 8 Gold, 4 Silver and 4 Bronze certificates. Well done!

Mrs Verma's Big Ideas for Curious Minds
Geography
As a school we love to stretch and challenge our children, to enrich their education beyond the curriculum. Every week I will be sharing with you some discussion topics, new vocabulary, Maths riddles and book recommendations, that will infect our children with a love of learning. Word of the week - ineffable (adj) - Too great to be described in words
The vast white wilderness stretched out before them, it's ineffable size and emptiness filling each of the explorers with a sense of apprehension and exhilaration.
From Latin, ineffabilis, meaning unutterable; ineffable means that something is so powerful that is renders the viewer speechless.

Calling all bookworms - Geography
Our World: First Book of Geography by Sue Lowell Gallion
A beautiful, nostalgic-feeling book that will delight our younger readers and help introduce them to the idea of geography and differing environments for the first time.
Adventures Around The Globe by The Lonely Planet
A great book for keeping young travellers entertained on the move, with fun facts, sticker scenes, colouring pages and puzzles, as well as a 3D model of the globe to make and decorate.
Prisoners of Geography: Our World Explained in 12 Simple Maps by Tim Marshall
This new children’s version of an adult Sunday Times bestseller is a fascinating read on Geopolitics for our older children. Pitched perfectly for eight to eleven-year-olds, this book will make younger readers look at maps in a whole new way.

“As stewards of God's creation, we are called to make the earth a beautiful garden for the human family. When we destroy our forests, ravage our soil and pollute our seas, we betray that noble calling.”- Pope Francis.
Yours sincerely,
