Dear Parents,
On Monday, we were blessed to have Bishop David come and visit our beautiful school. He had a wonderful tour with our Head Boy, Head Girl and Deputies, visiting every class, from Early Years to Remove he saw a wide variety of exciting lessons. His tour also included our "God Through Art" exhibition and a walk through the history of St Bernard's Prep. We gathered together as a whole school in the Peace Garden and recited the Our Father in French. Bishop David then addressed the children giving an inspirational talk on working hard and following your dreams. We ended the visit by presenting him with a prayer book, written by the children and a personalised prayer pebble. Finally, I would like to add, I was incredibly proud, everyone he met was a shining ambassador for St Bernard's Prep which was confirmed when the Bishop commented on the energy he felt from both the children and the staff. What a special school we are!

Lent Reflection and Family Breakfast
Thank you to Ms Underwood who led our beautiful reflection by taking us on the first part of the journey through a children's version of the Stations of The Cross. All the families listened intently and showed reverence and respect throughout. We were then led into the gallery for a family breakfast and an opportunity to gather together.
We will continue our journey next Friday morning at 7.30am.

Walk Against Hunger
Today the children participated in CAFOD's "Walk Against Hunger" Lentern challenge. They walked with their buddies around the field three times. We ended our walk with a quiet reflection thinking about how grateful we are for the food on our plates.

Musical Talent
Hailee in Upper Trans (Yr 5) spent last weekend in London with the National Children's Orchestra at Goldsmith University. Hailee and 70 other children showcased five difference pieces, so they could share with their parents what they had been rehearsing in the previous few weeks. Hailee said that the conductor emphasised that it was not a performance, just a 'share' with their parents. We have also had the privilege to 'share' Haliee's talent this week when she played a beautiful piece during our reconciliation. Amazing, thank you Hailee.

Under 10 Football Tournament at Claire’s Court
Last week Friday our Under 10A football team travelled to Maidenhead to participate in the annual Claire’s Court Tournament. Our team put up a very good effort throughout the day against very strong opposition. We progressed through to the Bowl Final and although we did not win it, our children certainly proved their worth in a very tight match. We were delighted with our performance as runners-up in the section. Well done to all our players and a special well done to Arjan for being nominated as our team’s MVP of the day.
Inter-House Football
Our children in Years 4, 5 and 6 have all had a very busy week participating in mixed inter-house football matches. So far the competition has been very tight with some exciting games being played and many fantastic goals being scored. It has been absolutely wonderful to see all the boys and girls in mixed teams working exceptionally well alongside each other to produce outstanding team play. Next week we will reveal the final standings of each respective year group. Well done everybody!

Windsor Castle School Trip
We were blessed with beautiful weather for Upper Prep's (Yr 2) school trip to Windsor Castle. The children loved learning about the motte and bailey fortification, seeing the dolls house, visiting the St George's Chapel and watching the changing of the guard. They were beautifully behaved and were great ambassadors for St Bernard's Prep.

Art Historians
Lower Trans (Yr 3) participated in a lovely RE lesson this week when they compared five paintings of The Last Supper, some traditional and some modern. The children were asked to identify three things that they noticed about each painting, and three questions they would like to ask about each painting. The children were fantastic at comparing the paintings and Ms Underwood and Mrs Verma were delighted with the observations the children made, the deep thinking questions they asked and the excellent use of religious vocabulary.
The children also spent time this week being ‘History Detectives’ and looked at artefacts from the Bronze Age. The children studied the objects closely and tried to decide what they were made of and what they were used for.

Mrs Verma's Big Ideas for Curious Minds
As a school we love to stretch and challenge our children, to enrich their education beyond the curriculum. Every week I will be sharing with you some discussion topics, new vocabulary, Maths riddles and book recommendations, that will infect our children with a love of learning. These will all be posted in the Parent Portal section of our website as well.

In The News This Week - Antartic
A couple of weeks ago we reported that there was an expedition to search for the Endurance, the lost vessel of Sir Ernest Shackleton 107 years after it sank. This week scientist has discovered the shipwreck in remarkable condition.
The ship was crushed by sea-ice and sank in 1915, forcing Shackleton and his men to make an astonishing escape on foot and in small boats.
"Without any exaggeration this is the finest wooden shipwreck I have ever seen - by far," said marine archaeologist Mensun Bound, who is on the discovery expedition and has now fulfilled a dream ambition in his near 50-year career.
"It is upright, well proud of the seabed, intact, and in a brilliant state of preservation," he told BBC News.

A charming tale about a young boy who wonders where is home. With the help of some animals and wise dragon, he discovers home is never far away. The first children's book from bestselling author and poet Lemn Sissay, this is a lovely celebration of curiosity and belonging.
The Worst Class In The World Dares You by Joanna Nadin and illustrated by Rikin Parekh
This is the third book in a hilarious series about the disorderly pupils of Class 4B, labelled 'the worst class in the world' by their brusque headteacher. With two side-splittingly funny short stories, it will delight mischievous children and strike fear into all teachers.

This entertaining, fact-filled book about politics invites young readers to imagine how they would run a country if they unexpectedly found themselves in charge. This superb book will inspire children to question and understand more about the world in which they live.
