Dear Parents,
It has been a bustling week at school with all our children engaging in many exciting activities.
The week began with the celebration of Children's Mental Health Week. The focus was on empowering our children and instilling confidence to recognise the importance of their own voices. The children participated in a range of activities aimed at promoting positive mental health and self-care.
On Wednesday, Year 5 all had an absolutely fabulous time at the Rose Theatre in Kingston, seeing 'The Boy at the Back of the Class'. The children had all read the book in class, during the Advent term so this was a fantastic opportunity to see the characters brought to life on stage. Told from a child’s perspective, balancing heart and humour, The Boy at the Back of the Class highlighted the power of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn’t always make sense and reminded us that everyone needs a place to call home. The emotions were so real, and the message was powerful. A reminder to stand up against bullying. As a special treat, ice creams were ordered for the interval and enjoyed by children and adults alike!
Also on Wednesday, our Year 6 children embarked on an amazing adventure starting at the National Gallery. Mrs Bowen, was a fantastic tour guide and truly brought each painting to life with her vast knowledge.
From classical masterpieces to contemporary art, the children were mesmerised as they explored the rich history of the paintings. It was like stepping into a whole new artistic world.
After immersing themselves in art, they headed to Trafalgar Square, where they enjoyed a delicious lunch and even made some feathery friends – the friendly pigeons of London!
To end the day on a magical note, our Year 6's were in for a treat, we felt after their hard work and commitment to their performance of 'The Wizard of Oz' before Christmas, we had to take them to see Wicked! They headed to the Apollo Victoria Theatre to watch the enchanting performance. The show left them spellbound, with its dazzling sets and captivating music.
The experience was truly unforgettable, filled with joy, laughter, and cultural enrichment. We are so proud of our Year 6 children for embracing this opportunity.
But that is not all, our Year 3 & 4 children have been working incredibly hard preparing for their upcoming 'Peace Child' production, and the corridors are buzzing with their voices and enthusiasm.
'Peace Child' is a heartwarming musical play that explores important themes of peace, unity, and understanding. It's a perfect opportunity for our young performers to showcase their talent and spread a powerful message of harmony to our school community.
The hall has been transformed into a magical world of music and creativity as our children rehearse their songs and dances. From catchy tunes to mesmerizing choreography, we guarantee you will be amazed by their incredible performances!
Finally, to top the week off we are all looking forward to a bit of a boogie at the FOP's Valentines Disco.

Upper Prep Liturgy - The Lord's Strength
On Wednesday, the Upper Prep children led a truly remarkable Liturgy for parents and children alike. It was an especially meaningful event as this week marks Children's Mental Health Week.
During this Liturgy, we focused on the theme of drawing on the Lord's strength during troubled times. We reminded ourselves that He is the guiding light shining bright in all our lives.
It was a powerful and uplifting experience, as the children shared heartfelt prayers and readings that resonated with everyone present. Their enthusiasm and sincerity truly touched our hearts.
By sharing this special moment during Children's Mental Health Week, we hope to encourage open conversations about mental health and remind everyone that seeking strength from the Lord and supporting one another makes us stronger together.

Children's Mental Health Matters Assembly
Today, I led the Children's Mental Health Matters Assembly. The hall was so colourful as the children were wearing clothes to express how they were feeling.
During the assembly, we took the opportunity to reflect on what truly matters and the messages we want the world to hear. The children poured their hearts out, sharing their innermost feelings, thoughts, dreams, and important messages. It was truly inspiring to witness their passion and creativity.
Our children were super excited to show off their amazing megaphones that they designed themselves. We heard heartfelt messages about love, kindness, understanding, and the importance of mental well-being. Our children reminded us all that everyone's feelings are valid and that it’s okay to ask for help when we need it.
I am so proud of our children for not only expressing themselves, but also for being such empathetic individuals. They truly embody the spirit of our school community.

Our Micro and Mini Dukes are gearing up for their next challenge - 'Exercise'! This week, they tackled an intense HIIT class that left us all in awe.
Burpees, Mountain climbers, squats and planks - our young athletes fearlessly showcased their strength, determination, and agility!
We couldn't be prouder of their commitment and hard work. These little dynamos are setting an incredible example for all of us. Keep it up, champs.

Junior Dukes
Today, our fantastic Junior Dukes took part in the RSPB Bird Watch and we had an absolute blast! They were on the lookout for our feathered friends and let me tell you, they didn't disappoint, here is a glimpse of what they spotted:
- The majestic Red Kite soaring high above the trees.
- A cheeky little Robin, perched proudly on a branch.
- And can you believe it, a whole squadron of Magpies and a gaggle of lively Gulls.
Despite our best efforts, there were no Partridges in a pear tree this time, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for them next time.
Our courageous Junior Dukes embraced the beauty of nature with wide eyes and smiles. They learnt about the diversity of birdlife, while also developing patience and observation skills. Such a valuable experience that will stay with them for a lifetime.

School Council
We are super excited to announce that our amazing School Council have come up with a fantastic plan to make our school even better, by introducing a Tuck Shop.
Starting from Friday 23rd February, at 3.30pm, you can find our delicious treats just outside the atrium. Keep an eye out for the posters around the school, so you don't miss out.
Here's the best part: our pupils carried out a student survey to decide what yummy treats they could sell. So, you know it's going to be good.
To make it super convenient for everyone, there's no need to bring any money to school. Parents can simply bring cash when they pick up their children. Please try to bring the correct money if possible.
Let's get everyone excited about this incredible initiative!

Pre-Early Years and Early Years
It was storytime in Nursery, and this week our children have been captivated by the classic tale of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.
To bring this magical story to life, our little ones have been getting creative with a range of materials and constructing their very own bridges. Using their imaginations and problem-solving skills, our budding engineers have built sturdy bridges for the goats to cross. Their designs are truly impressive!
Not only does this activity encourage teamwork and collaboration, but it also helps develop fine motor skills and spatial awareness. Our dedicated staff have been guiding our little explorers along the way, ensuring they embrace every step of this hands-on learning adventure.

Early Years 2
This week in Early Years 2, our little ones delved into the world of mindfulness and practised the art of colouring for Wellbeing Wednesday.
Mindfulness is an incredible tool that helps young minds develop self-awareness and emotional resilience. It's all about slowing down and living in the present moment. What better way to kickstart this practice than with a mindful colouring session?
Our amazing children got their creative juices flowing as they carefully chose their favourite colours and filled in intricate designs. The concentration and focus were truly inspiring!
Not only is this activity fun and engaging, but it also helps develop fine motor skills, boosts concentration, and encourages a sense of calmness and tranquillity. All vital for young minds as they navigate the busy world around them.
We are proud of our Early Years 2 class for embracing mindfulness and discovering the positive impact it can have on their overall wellbeing.

It was truly enchanting to see these young minds find solace in stillness, enveloped in an atmosphere of tranquility and positive energy. Our Prep (Year 1) and Upper Trans (Year 5) buddies supported each other, creating an environment of empathy, understanding, and shared growth.

Upper Prep - Chinese New Year and lots more
You may have heard “Gong hei fat choy" echoing from the Upper Prep classrooms this week as the children learnt all about the Lunar New Year and how people celebrate with good food and the giving of lucky red envelopes. Everyone enjoyed making paper concertina dragons and looking at lanterns from Chinatown in London.
There was also much excitement as we finished reading our class book ‘Cereal Superfan’ The children were tasked with taking on the role of a television presenter selling their new cereal to the public! After this they scribed a persuasive piece of writing using emotive language and commands, it was fantastic to see everyone using their best handwriting too. Following this the pupils visited the ICT suite to design their own colourful cereal boxes. It was very impressive to see them independently using Canva and adding relevent text and graphics.
On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have Detective Chief Inspector Kanwar and PC Grewal visit us to give the children an insight into their roles in policing the Changing of the Guard and how they keep our communities safe.

Trans - Mental Health Week
This week, our talented Year 4 children have been showcasing their creativity by drawing what matters to them. From the simplest joys in their everyday lives to the bigger issues shaping the wider world, their beautifully crafted artwork is truly inspiring.
Take a moment to appreciate their unique perspectives, as their drawings spiral from the small things close to their hearts, slowly making their way outwards to the significant concerns in our society.
It's incredible to witness the diverse range of ideas and concerns expressed by our Year 4 children. By giving them a platform to voice their thoughts, we are ensuring their opinions are heard and valued.
The children have been learning about gratitude, and they have taken it a step further by writing touching letters of appreciation.
In a world where kindness often goes unnoticed, our children wanted to express their gratitude to those who have made a positive impact on their lives. From teachers and parents to friends and local heroes, these letters are overflowing with heartfelt words of thanks.
It's incredible to see how these young minds have understood the power of gratitude and how it can bring joy to both the sender and the recipient. Their words are a reminder that, no matter the size of the gesture, expressing your appreciation can have a profound impact.

Our skilled Chef Louis delighted us with a wonderful Chinese New Year menu on Thursday. The flavours were exceptional, and we were all left wanting more.
Our lunch featured delectable dishes such as crispy spring rolls, soy-infused noodles, stir-fried vegetables, and flavorful Kung Pao chicken. Traditional Chinese fortune cookies added to the authentic culinary experience that had us all craving more.
Excitement filled the whole school as we gathered in the dining hall, discussing our favorite dishes and sharing Chinese New Year traditions. This event provided a fantastic opportunity for us to explore diverse cultures and traditions, broadening our horizons and fostering appreciation for the diversity within our school community.

Woodwind Instruments
There are currently still a few places left for children to take up regular Woodwind (Clarinet, Flute and Saxophone) lessons in school.
Learning a Woodwind instrument is a great social and fun way to learn to play music, as these instruments give children the opportunity to play in groups with other like-minded musicians whilst still encouraging all the other life skills that learning a musical instrument gives us (motor and co-ordination skills, listening skills, reading skills, counting skills, multi tasking skills, music appreciation skills ....), the list is endless!
Our Woodwind teacher, Sue Dunsdon, has many years of teaching experience and has had a 100% exam pass rate at St Bernard's Prep, with her students often gaining at least Grade 3 ABRSM before leaving primary school. Sue was initially a classically trained musician but also has a degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. She is a proficient 'instrument doubler', performing on Clarinet, Flute and Saxophone in local jazz Big Bands and Pit Orchestras for musicals shows, such as 42nd Street, Oliver, Little Mermaid, Sister Act, The Sound of Music, Grease, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Footloose, to name but a few.
If you are keen for your child to take up this amazing opportunity to learn one of these instruments, please fill in the form in the Parent Portal and return it to reception. Places will be taken on a 'first come first served' basis, so please don't leave it too long before applying as your child may miss out. Your child may well be the next Benny Goodman, James Galway or Charlie Parker of today!

Guitar Lessons
We currently have limited slots available for anyone wishing to take up Guitar lessons at school on a weekly basis.
Our guitar teacher, Travis Williams, is a true rockstar. He has been a professional drummer, guitarist, and singer, and has shared the stage with legends like Shane McGowan (The Pogues), Paul Simonon (The Clash and Gorillaz), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), and many more!
What sets Travis apart is his passion for teaching and ensuring children have fun whilst learning. With his expertise, Travis's students have achieved an impressive average mark of 86% in all graded exams. It is not uncommon for his pupils to achieve Grade 4, which is GCSE level, before leaving primary school!
If you are eager to get your child started on a musical journey, simply complete the form in the Parent Portal and return it to reception. Don't wait too long, as slots are limited and in high demand!
Get your child's creative juices flowing, boost their confidence, and let the music fill their souls! Don't miss out on this amazing opportunity!
