Newsletter Friday 18th June 2021

Dear Parents,

There has been a great atmosphere around school all week. When the weather has permitted, we've had sports on the field, rehearsals for the Year 6 production in the hall and a Chess Championship that has attracted quite a crowd of spectators.

Following the success of our Year 6 children in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge last month, a selection of our pupils went through to take part in the Kangaroo Challenge. This round is by invitation only for the highest scoring entrants. To have 6 of our pupils qualify for the Kangaroo Challenge is an impressive achievement and testament to the brilliant teaching and the children's hard work. Very well done Year 6, you've set the bar high for the years that follow you!

RE Gold Award

St Bernard’s Prep has once again challenged itself in entering into a review of RE across the whole school. This took the form of the ‘RE Quality Mark’, which was developed to celebrate good RE in education. We are delighted to share the news with you all that for the second time in 5 years St Bernard’s Prep has been awarded a GOLD Quality Mark for RE. I would like to acknowledge the fabulous work of all the staff and especially all the children who made this happen. Well done one and all.

Open Day

We are receiving a number of enquiries from prospective parents and so have decided to add an extra day to our school tour and a Stay&Play for the Early Years Department. Many of our new parents say that they have been recommended St Bernard's Prep by you, our existing parents. Please do let friends and family know that they are able to make an appointment to come and visit by emailing admissions@stbernardsprep.org

World Class Arena

Congratulations to the 20 pupils across Years 4 and 5 who were selected to take part in the World Class Arena. The maths competition, which was open to children age 8 -11, encourages children to problem-solve creatively. The assessment comes in two parts - paper and computer based, and the children did incredibly well, gaining 16 distinctions, 3 merits and 1 pass.  Well done to everyone who took part.

Chess Championship

Congratulation to Jayan and Sahas, Year 5, for making it to the final of the Chess Championship, and well done to Kabir and Tilak for making the semi-finals. After an epic battle over 1 and ½ hours, the match ended in a stalemate. Whoever emerges as our 2021 Chess Champion will play an exhibition match against Sumant in Year 6, who is a county Chess player.

Baylab Finalists

Our 5 Baylab Lab Coat Competition Finalists were awarded their certificates and a lovely pack of colouring pencils. Congratulations to Jasmine, Yuvi, Rohan, Sahas and Aarush.

Young Citizens

The Make a Difference Go-Givers Challenge is a child-led social action programme that all year groups within the school are taking part in. It provides the children with an opportunity to identify and research a social or environmental issue that they feel passionate about, then make a difference to this through awareness raising, fundraising or taking practical action. The programme enables the children to get a real understanding of the issues communities face, and take the lead in making a difference to them. They learn to empathise with those who are disadvantaged, recognise the role of government, voluntary groups and charitable organisations and consider the part they can play in bringing about positive change. We are so excited to be able to give this opportunity to our children and hope that they will really enjoy the challenge. There have been some fantastic ideas raised by the children, which we look forward to sharing with you soon.

When a child is absent from school for any period of time, a leave of absence form has to be submitted to Mr Cheesman to authorise.  The form, which can be found in the parent portal section of the website, is to be sent to info@stbernardsprep.org once completed. You will receive a return email confirming that the absence has been authorised.
