NRich Problem Solving School Status
We are very excited to become an NRich Problem Solving School
Here at St Bernard's we have always been very proud of our mathematical achievements and gaining this award will help us to continue to go from strength to strength. An NRICH Problem-Solving School is an educational institution that integrates problem-solving at the core of its mathematics curriculum, fostering students' abilities to tackle unfamiliar problems with confidence. This approach helps children develop critical thinking and aims to create a safe environment in which learners explore, take risks, and appreciate the value of learning from their mistakes. The aim is of the initiative is to help our children develop and improve their mathematical thinking.
Mrs Whittaker who has spearheaded this initiative, has also set up a Problem Solving Club for invited mathematicians in line with the principles of the award. The club will be aided by four of our past pupils who are now at Upton Grammar and have agreed to support our budding mathematicians. The first session took place this week and was a resounding success and featured a complex 'tic tac toe' problem and a round of mathematical bingo. The children were all excited for future sessions.
